For the Love of Fruits & Veggies: BHM & V-Day Edition ❤️💛💚🖤🍓🥑🍉🍅

Updated: Mar 5

We AIN’T New To This!

Black people have been eating vegetables for centuries; and not necessarily for the health benefits but to build community & connect with others.

The traditional “Sunday Dinner” was a special time for Family & Fellowship and featured classic vegetable-inspired dishes such as collard greens, candied yams and cabbage---with smoked meat for added flavor [insert YUM].

So why was eating vegetables the BEST culturally-specific health practice?

Vegetables are parts of plants that can be used as food. They contain vitamins, minerals and nutrients that contribute to our Growth & Development. Vegetables come in many colors, shapes and sizes and each nourishes our body in a different way.

3 Staple Healthy Fruits & Veggies of the Black Community

For the last 10 years, much emphasis has been placed on eating foods for good health and not simply for fun. Our bodies NEED the right kind of foods to give us energy and help it function properly.

Here are the Top 3 Vegetables that Black people enjoy eating because they taste great, when cooked, and they contribute to a balanced diet.

 1.      Collard Greens: Rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins, these vegetables contribute to overall health.

 2.      Sweet Potatoes: Often featured in various side dishes, sweet potatoes are a nutritious source of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants.

 3.      Okra: Promoting digestive health, okra is low in calories and high in antioxidants, fiber and vitamins.

All of these culturally-significant foods offer a wide variety of health benefits.

Let’s Get Back to Healthy Eating

Many people have come to the realization that food plays a pivotal role in our health and well being. Our ability to live long and healthy lives is contingent upon our food choices. So, let’s get back to being a community that prioritizes making Healthy Choices which will essentially lead to us having Healthy Bodies & Healthier Families and Communities.
