What do Yoo-hoo strawberry flavored drink, Pez assorted candy, Good Humor strawberry shortcake bar and Dubble Bubble original twist bubble gum have in common?
They all contain the harmful additive, Erythrosine (Red Dye 3) which has been linked to very serious health concerns. Studies have shown that it causes cancer in rats exposed at high levels, raising concerns about its POTENTIAL to cause cancer in humans. Research also suggests it may contribute to health issues in kids, such as ADHD and behavioral challenges.
Already banned in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Red Dye 3 is a synthetic food coloring now prohibited in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration. This ban is enforced under the Delaney Clause, a statute that mandates the FDA to ban any additive shown to cause cancer in humans or animals, including rats.
Now, food manufacturers have until January 2027 to remove Red Dye 3 from their products. Medicine containing the ingredient will need to be reformulated by January 2028.
Although a positive shift in the right direction for food safety and kids' health, this change may not fare well with kids since it can negatively affect the taste of their favorite snacks.
So here are 4 Tips to help Kids and their Parents Transition, smoothly:
1. Explain the change to kids in language they can understand.
Frame it positively:
• "We're going on a fun adventure to find snacks with colors that won't make your body sick!"
2. Introduce natural dye alternatives
• Look for snacks colored with beet juice or berries.
3. Involve kids in grocery shopping
• Let them pick out NEW snacks with naturally colored options.
4. Be patient with the transition
• Some kids may need time to adjust to new tastes and visuals. Celebrate small wins when they enjoy natural alternatives.
The ban on Red Dye 3 marks a significant step toward protecting kids' health by reducing exposure to potentially harmful additives. Together, families can build a better future, one healthy snack at a time.
